Symbolic Meaning of the Spider

I am not fond of spiders by a long shot. I have had my share of bad experiences with spiders so I would really prefer not to have a message coming to me by way of the spider symbolism but it has been unavoidable this past week. Spiders every where!!!

One day this past week one crawled on my leg. Day two of the spider encounters a small one crawling on the tile floor in my hallway. Day three spider encounter sitting at my computer another little one came down on it’s web right in front of the monitor. Obviously by that point I was not noticing a pattern so that night a dream full of little spiders so I said “Okay, I am paying attention and I get that you are trying to tell me something.” This morning a spider is building a home on my patio and I must admit I feel guilty at the thought of ruining his day by taking a broom to him and his home he worked so hard on overnight. lol. I must say that with all these spider encounters I did not have any of the normal anxiety emotions I normally feel in the pit of my stomach at the sight of them. That in itself say a little something…that this message is not one to feel anxious about and it is not a bad omen or warning.

The spider is an ancient symbol of power, mystery and growth. Much of what the spider has to tell us is in the construction of it’s web. The spider weaves an intricate web that serves as his home, the way he gets food to feed himself and also acts as a place of growth for its eggs. For it’s life the web for the spider is about survival. Also consider that the spider can CREATE it’s web just about any where and it is not even concerned it seems about what might come along at any moment and ruin it’s hard work. The spider to me is fearless for it will build its web outside with no thought of the fact that it might rain and the winds blow and wipe out its home. It just moves on without another thought and starts the process all over again some where else and many times bravely again in the same place.

What about us humans? The spider shows us that it is all about CHOICES. We have choices (free will) we can make and we literally can make any choice and any decision we want, true? True! Ahhhh but the spider tells us something even more important. Whatever choice we make constructs our lives and so even though we may be fearless we still need to be mindful of the choices and decisions we make for we create our own destiny.

So if you have been recently pondering some decision and unsure of what direction to head in or unsure if the decision will keep you on or throw you off your path…the spider says the decision can be any direction but just remember whatever you end up with is what you yourself have weaved.

Hello Sherry! I found this blog wonderful! I have also read through some of the comments and your responses to them and it has driven me to post my experience with spiders. Perhaps you can assess the situation for me, although it may be much more vague & basic compared to everyone else’s. I am an Espiritista and later in my life my path is Palo. Santeria & Sanse are an option as well as many others, but obviously, I am into Spiritism & an African & perhaps Native American spirituality & way of life. (don’t want to call it religion)

The other night, I went to meditate at my mini-altar and ended up just having some deep prayer. With one white candle lit, I offered a gift of jewelry, a ring, the color of yellow and brown with jewels crossing through it to Oshun and prayed and prayed to the Divine. I asked the Divine, my Guardian Spirit(s), and Oshun for certain things within my life surrounding love and material things (which she is known to help her children with..although I have yet to learn if she is my Guardian or not within Santeria, as I am not involved in those traditions deeply yet.) When I was almost done with prayer, I opened my eyes and a medium-sized black Spider speeds over to the Kinara I had my candle in and sits there. I have always been creeped out and irritated by spiders, but I thought to myself, I should not kill it, I should let it crawl onto a piece of paper and take it outside. As soon as I put a piece of paper down next to it, it swiftly turned to face me and I was so startled I killed it. I had to hit it a few times, and the last time, I saw one of it’s legs move while the rest of it’s body had been obliterated. At that moment, I actually felt a sadness or remorse for this spider and felt bad about killing it, which I have NEVER felt, ever in my history of killing spiders. LOL. I mean, I really cannot stand the sight of them, or actually, COULD not. I feel I have become a bit more comfortable seeing smaller ones but the big ones still creep me out. I always run into a spider somewhere, speaking of past and present. I’ve been seeing what looks like baby ones in random places, like the smoke bench at work, and i kind of just swipe them away from me with no intention of killing them.

I looked up Spiders in correlation with Oshun and found little tidbits of interesting information regarding it. Spiders, as well as bees, peacocks, vultures (and a few others that I am forgetting) are sacred to Oshun. And she was who I made an offering to and prayed to for certain things (indirectly, through the Divine AND directly)

At the time of my deep prayer at the altar, it was already past midnight, so it was on a Saturday, which is a sacred day for Oshun. If you haven’t already figured it out, I am drawn to Oshun, as well as 2 other Orishas (but I have love for ALL of them) Well I had an Oshun day that same day later on at work. I wore a white smock when usually I wear patterns, and there were little signs of Oshun throughout my day. It also reminds me of last week when I decided to wear my beautiful smock with colorful peacock feathers on it, and that same day, the activities director showed me her peacock ceramic she had been working on and painted for over a year. She allowed me to donate $15 to the elders at my job and a card game for it. I was SO ecstatic within my spirit. Anyway, I’ve digressed but that was just to show you the affinity I have towards her. Besides that fact, 3 of my Spirit guides are children OF or have strong connections to Oshun, and the other 2 Orisha I am drawn to.

I’m just wondering what the symbolism of this particular spider was that joined in on my meditation/prayer session and turned to face me right in front of my kinara (which the candle sat in)…I still feel kind of bad that I killed it but it was only instinct for me. I plan to get a reading from a Babalawo soon.

I have this feeling Oshun was trying to speak to me in some way. I would really appreciate your insight and I do apologize for the length of this inquiry! If you have any insight, please do share. Thank you. Love, Peace & Spiritual Increase to you.

Also, I had a dream several years ago while I was involved in a sexual encounter with a guy. We had both fallen asleep and I dreamed of a HUMONGOUS Spider, I mean, it was so huge, probably about the size of a car, if not bigger…I don’t remember now what it was doing but I do remember how big it was…I woke up SCREAMING and startled him. He was holding me, trying to comfort me, as I was still truly startled and had labored breathing. I may have even been crying or had watery eyes but I don’t remember. I just now recalled this dream after posting my first comment.

Also, on another note, there is plenty of negative energy within my home right now as well as on me. I was doing cleansings in the home and cleanisngs of people, including myself…with the help of my Spirit Guides but I have been blocked from doing so because of so much negative energy and negative spirits that have been brought into this house since the day I stopped being able to communicate with them. They are still with me, of course and I am still able to communicate within my own Spirit, just not them. Not until I spend more time meditating will I be able to start cleaning again. I thought maybe that would help you with insight into the spider ordeal at my altar and my life overall. The dream I mentioned above was years ago, but perhaps you have insight into that as well.

  3. Sherry says:

    Yomi,
I guess it is possible that the spider was a symbol related to what you were doing. One thing a spider symbolizes is a powerful force protecting you against your self-destructive behavior. That is one of the basic meanings of the spider. You really have to look at symbols in relation to the context of what is going on in your life at the time or what you were doing at the time.

Please don’t take offence but I am required to attempt as best I can to tell the truth as I have been taught it…so please don’t take personal offense. As most know I study the teachings of the ascended masters and such practices such as Santeria, witch craft, etc are taught against as leading to darkness. Of course everyone must decide in the end for themselves what they believe as truth. The dream you speak of in your other comment speaks of starting out as being asleep and it is the spider that awakens you…what are you being awoken to? Normally asleep implies before we awaken spiritually. It was the spider that startled you awaken and then there is fear which is often considered a way to tell if something is good or has good intentions it would not instill fear. Interesting still that as you typed your comment you remembered the dream which is no coincidence that this was brought to your mind at that time. You have been stopped from communicating with your guides and stopped from cleansing of people and your home. Think about it? Our guides are of the light but of course if we turn to dark eventually we have to get guides that are also of the dark. It actually makes sense that you may be stopped from doing clearings of certain people…you would be transferring energy to those people in the process and that would be a transfer of dark energy. Dark energy is not good for someone who is not of dark energy…it would affect them in a negative way. I was recently sent healing energy from someone I know who I really like a lot but she practices witchcraft. The energy made me sick and I had to clear myself of it. Consider whether you want to continue going down the path you are travelling on. I won’t approve or disapprove but I just suggest you be sure before preceding because that negative energy you are finding around you may get worse although you may become accustomed to it.

Sorry I couldn’t be much more help. Just continue watching for signs and symbols. I wish you well no matter what you decide to do.

    Sherry

Oh, I take no offense at all. Your beliefs are yours and not mine. They are also very popular beliefs amongst devout Christians who do not know much about the influence of Christianity/Catholicism within the works of Spiritism/Kardecian beliefs as well as African religions. There is hardly anything dark about Kardecism. Thank you for your opinion. Much love & light to you!

  5. Yomi says:

I posted it just for your enlightenment and to teach YOU as well as whoever else clicks on it from these comments. It’s not about whether you decide to teach it or not because the students seeking truth will continue to flourish on their paths whether you do or do not. MY ascended master (The Almighty GOD) and Self felt it beneficial to you that I share it. You may learn something about other walk(s) of life that do not try to hold precedence over any others or condemn anyone who does not follow their ways, but are actually here to help one reclaim the love & peace for all of our brothers & sisters in like spiritual alignment . (: Have a great one.

  6. Sherry says:

Sorry you took offense. None was intended. Sorry I was busy yesterday and didn’t get time to watch it but I will today. I know the way I do things may seem more than just picky and over the top but my intention is just to be responsible with information I help to put out there. You are a beautiful person and I feel bad if I have made you feel bad in the slightest way. I never doubted your intentions were good.

  7. Sherry says:

    Yomi,
I watched the video…sorry if I gave you the impression that I didn’t know about Santeria…I know about it very well actually and have studied many religions along my spiritual path. As I said before I meant no offense and am sorry I have angered you to the point of lashing out at me. If I have hurt you I apologize but I do not feel I have to feel any guilt for trying to speak truth although not to of course would have been easier. So obviously if I spoke a truth that was hard for me because I was more concerned about offending you…what have I done wrong and what am i guilty of? I can love you and not agree with you or be on the same page with you with all things. Whatever you follow is for you to decide and be the one approving of it….not me…I am not the one who approves that for you of course. You choose you own path and from what I see you have and you are happy with it and I am happy for you regardless. You don’t need to to call it right or wrong or to promote it in any way for you to believe it is right for you. I am sorry you felt the need to try to make me look unknowledgeable and novice…that is fine I will continue to write and continue to unselfishly help those who come to me. My actions speak for themselves…and I try to do all I do with dignity and grace. I do wish you well and am happy you have found something that makes you happy.
    Sherry XOXO

Hi, From time to time I have this recurrent dream. Basically, I can never remember the entire dream except for the end where a big black spider (we call these horse spiders) makes it way up the side of the bed then walks towards my face/head. Usually in the dream I wake up to see the spider moving towards me and become frightened by the impending danger. I always wake up (for real) before the spider reaches my face/head and hence I am never hurt. I usually feel a sense of relief when I wake up. Sometimes these dreams may be accompanied by real life situations of the spider showing up near or over the entrance of a door to my home or sometimes a window. The interesting think is that whether the spider shows up in a dream or real life it never gets the chance to actually touch or hurt me. For eg if its over the door I will some how see it before it touches me. Another eg, I was about to hold on to a curtain at my living room window in order to take it down and I some how got distracted by a conversation and by the time I went to remove the curtain a few minutes later a spider was creeping out from between the folds of the curtain at the exact spot I was about to hold it at a few mins earlier. Can you kindly give some feed back on this? Do the spiders appear to bring warnings? Do I need to pay attention to these dreams/occurrences? Thank you.

Hello Sherry, I read your experiences and found it really interesting, you might help me too.
Let me tell you my story: (And please respond me, I want your interpretation)
I moved to my new place 6 months ago. From that time I moved in, I found ants in my place. They were almost everywhere. If I had coffee in front of me, they just went to my coffee cup in front of me. I couldn’t put anything out of fridge and it was so annoying. I fought with them for almost five months, I sprayed every day but I couldn’t get rid of them. I had a problem called Indometrioesis for a year. I had to have anti pregnancy medicine everymonth to avoid this sickness. Last month I decided to stop having more medicine and I waited till I get period. Something very strange happened. The first day that I got period, I expected to have horrible pain, but strangely there was no pain and I had such a great period, seemed that I haven’t had this sickness, STRANGELY the first day of my period, all the ants disappeared, and now after a month I don’t have any ants in my place.
I found that there was a relation between these two, which I still wonder and don’t know how I can explain it!
But the story is not finished yet! I found I have so many spiders under my bed. when I was child I afraid of them to death, after I got older I feel a bit better but still I hate them. My bed is almost stuck to the ground and it seems that there is no hole that they can get in to it, but after a while I have to take everything off my bed and clean it and I see sometimes about 15 of them. There are some other places such as behind wardrobe but amazingly they are under my bed. I even wonder what can they find to eat, because there is no insect under my bed to feed them!
Recently I found some more weird insects, I was in KFC and having my sandwich outdoor, I had my coke on the table, then out of nowhere two tiny cockroach came out of table and walked on my table, they were there all the time that I had my dinner and walking on my table, I looked at other tables but other people were sitting and nobody had my problem!
Recently I was working with my computer and after I think about 2 hours when I stood upand looked at my chair where I was sitting, I saw a big insect, which I don’t know at all that what is its name, it had two horn, I wonder that I sat on him few hours and it didn’t bite me!!!!!!!!
So as you see, there are some signs that I need to decode and I need help.
Please help me an tell me what do you think????????????????
One more thing is after I moved to my new place, on my landlord wardrobe and bed , I see white fungi as well. I am such a clean person, and I clean it but it comes back again and it’s so annoying.

Please respond me in my email. Thanks in Advance.

Having a baby spider take up residence near a box which is to hold a paper container in my kitchen, I know now with the spirituality with me what this is. It is for my comfort plus the significance of the symbolic representation of the arachnid.
This particular spider does not grow bigger than a dot, which is the size it’s at now, remaining a tiny arachnid as small as it is as an adult.

Having found a “god” out there, this entity has put one small such little gift for me to watch, “see,” enjoy the wonder of the little things once a year each year. Just one. I had one such right under my computer monitor couple of years ago, it just lived there, caught tiny bugs, liked the warmth of the monitor. I let it be, live there. Didn’t hurt a thing.
Next year one by the sink faucet, back of that. Now this one by the box. Go figure. Must be “in tune” with this creator being, even so the “perfect ones” whom are sometimes our guides.

I have compassion for all things, but common sense also, this little small “bug” won’t hurt a thing. It’s not a bad spider by species, nor does it live to make a million more. Just a wonder alone to live, as I do, to ponder, wonder, look at, kind of an “autotelic pet,” but I do not consider a pet, just another wonder of the nature of being.

Cool blog entry. Just had a spider on my hat, tried to knock it off. Five minutes later in was trying to crawl in my left ear. So I had to google the meaning…I used to always see little white spiders too. What I have taking away, is the bold word “CHOICE.” Although, the meaning here is kinda vague and leaves the outcome up to me; “the spider says the decision can be any direction but just remember whatever you end up with is what you yourself have weaved.” So true, yet so confronting!

hi, i have a weird question for you that has been bugging me for years….
my aunty seems to attract spiders wherever she goes. when she visits peoples houses spiders either show up while she is there or not long after she leaves. Her house and yard are also covered in them. a little background info…. she was born 18/7/1966, has been married twice ( 1st a catholic marriage, 2nd a wiccan), and she does still practice witchcraft. Oh, cant forget that she is petrified of spiders herself lol. i understand that spiders are common, but when she has been somewhere, they are visably everywhere.
thanks for reading and any insight would be appreciated :)

  16. Sherry Andrea says:

She still practiced the dark arts…then the question would be not what the spider symbol would mean to me but what it would mean to her…someone who practices something ritualistic even if I say we ignore that it may or may not be considered dark. Some meanings that may apply as it relates to what she has going on in her life:

SPIDER: Linked to treachery and death in many cultures, it was seen as a “trickster” in ancient Africa, a “spinner of fate” in ancient goddess cultures and — in ancient Greek myths — the goddess Arachne turned into a spider by her jealous rival Athena. “Christian” cultures have linked it both to an evil force that sucked blood from its victims and to “good luck” because of the cross on the back of some species.

Spider Medicine represents creativity. Its 8 legs represent the 4 winds of change and the 4 directions on the medicine wheel. Its body is in the shape of an 8, which represents infinite possibilities. “Spider people” must look beyond the web of illusion of the physical world and look beyond the horizon to other dimensions.

It means, “wake up girl and get creative. You’ve got a lot to say. Think, create, think, create.” Needless to say, spider medicine was telling me to get back to my office and start weaving new patterns for my life. I scooped up the spider medicine and took her downstairs to the garage where she would be safe and comfortable. I welcomed her to visit me another time when I start moving off track.

  17. jaz says:

what does that mean for the peoples houses she seems to leave spiders at?

  18. jaz says:

    * for the people whos houses she seems to leave spiders?

  19. Sherry Andrea says:

She was there. This is about her. Try not to make a square peg fit in a round hole. It is about her but you want to know a meaning for the spiders related to others even though it is not about them? I have heard of things like this happen before. If you are concerned you could talk to her about it and then if she decides to investigate what is going on with herself she can and other than that there is not much else you can do. Spirit will always keep trying to get our attention with signs, dreams, etc but every one does things or not in their own time.

I have a question for you…since april 2006 spiders have been with me..they are spiritual spiders. I see this as possibly webbing people together. I see spiritual spider webs in my home..see spiders on orbs floating around. The spider has webbed me..and webs continuously. I really don’t know what this means..

  21. Sherry Andrea says:

Are there non-spiritual spiders? The spiders body just like our body is impermanent. Look beyond that because your understanding of this alone will affect how you see the symbol of the spiders you have been seeing. As far as the spiders on orbs…spiders are not fazed by their home being destroyed…their home and home I mean also as the symbol of the body…they just build again. They move on and do not fret about the old home and with orbs as seen as spirits that maybe have passed on that spirit too has moved on from the body and has probably done so many many times and it is natural and life goes on…there is no ATTACHMENT to the body. Meditate on this because there is something that you are trying to be taught…what is it that you need to work on? Is it the lesson of attachment and non-permanence or a lesson of not making a big deal out of things that happen and being in ACCEPTANCE? Meditate on it and through meditation try to realize what you are being told to work on.

Your ac ting like the spider…trying to build a web, home, relationship without concern for it getting knocked down…spiders builds it web often in places that are hazardous where you would think “didn’t it know there was a great chance that wouldn’t work out? How could it have not noticed?”…not sure how you got something positive out of this symbol regarding this relationship unless you want it so bad that you are trying hard to make it so.
